The update
AI is coming to your TV, whether you want it or not. Amazon said its AI assistant Alexa+ will roll out to all compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. for free, Prime subscription or not. The update brings conversational search, smart home controls, and AI-powered recommendations. Previously, Alexa+ cost $19.99 a month for anyone without Amazon Prime, and was initially available on the new Fire TV devices announced last fall.
Now everyone gets upgraded automatically — no app download, no subscription. Compatible devices include current-generation Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and other Alexa+ built-in smart TVs from Hisense and Panasonic.
The industry pattern
The move follows a push to make AI services available on more consumer electronics, often through non-optional upgrades. Google rolled Gemini out to Google TV earlier this year, replacing simple search with AI conversational modes. Roku upgraded its voice assistant to AI last year. Amazon says Alexa+ customers now have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV as with the original Alexa — a signal people are engaging with the AI rather than just using the TV for lean-back entertainment.
What changed
Users no longer have to ask for shows by title; they can ask for suggestions by theme, age, or popularity — "a top-rated thriller" or "a historical drama with a strong female lead." The bot also manages smart home controls and can display Ring camera feeds on the TV.
The take
This is the clearest signal yet that AI assistants are being treated as table stakes for the living room, bundled in and made free to remove every adoption friction. The trade-off for consumers is straightforward: more capable, more conversational search in exchange for deeper, always-on AI presence in a device that was previously a passive entertainment box. For Amazon, it's a bet that engagement with Alexa+ turns the TV into a bigger wedge into the smart home.
