What Happened
Relativity Networks announced $22 million in SAFE note funding from Rhapsody Venture Partners, Bell Ventures Inc., and Faster Than Glass LLC, among others — plus a $40 million follow-on order from an unnamed leading hyperscaler. The company works in hollow-core fiber, a rarely deployed technology that transmits data roughly 50% faster than conventional fiber. Where traditional fiber sends light through fiber-optic glass, hollow-core fiber pushes the same light through a vacuum chamber in the center of the line, bringing it far closer to the theoretical limit of light speed.
Why It Matters
The difference is measured in microseconds — but at AI scale, microseconds compound. CEO Jason Eichenholz estimates a signal takes about five microseconds per kilometer in conventional fiber; hollow-core cuts that to about three and a half. When AI compute lived on a single rack of GPUs, that latency was easy to ignore. Now data center campuses sprawl across hundreds of acres and dozens of buildings, and the largest systems distribute compute across multiple campuses to reach available power — yet still need to operate as one synchronized machine.

The pitch is that cutting latency by half effectively lets developers span 50% larger distances before latency becomes a bottleneck. That's a partial escape from the harsh spatial and grid logic constraining data center buildouts.
The Bigger Picture
Eichenholz frames it as a shift in the industry's eras: "The first era of AI optimized for compute — GPU, GPU, GPU. The second era optimized the networking inside the data center. The third era that we see coming is optimizing the geography." With data center spend projected as high as $4 trillion by the end of the decade, and power-grid constraints shaping where buildouts can happen, technologies that relax the distance-latency tradeoff could quietly become strategic. Hollow-core fiber is still niche, but the $40M hyperscaler order is a signal that the big buyers are starting to take the geography angle seriously.
