OpenAI just laid out its enterprise playbook, and it's more ambitious than most people realize. The company isn't selling AI models anymore. It's selling an operating system for work.
The Two Questions
OpenAI's new enterprise chief (fresh from their first 90 days) identified the two questions every company is asking:
- How do we put the most capable AI across the entire business, not just individual copilots?
- How do we make AI part of everyday work so people unlock their full potential?
These aren't small questions. They're the difference between "AI helps me write emails" and "AI runs my company."
The Architecture: Frontier + Superapp
OpenAI's answer comes in two layers:
OpenAI Frontier is the intelligence layer. It's an orchestration platform that manages agents across a company's systems, tools, and data. The pitch: instead of agents trapped inside individual products, Frontier agents move freely across your entire business. Customers include Oracle, State Farm, and Uber.
The Unified AI Superapp is the experience layer. One place where employees interact with AI agents throughout the day, combining ChatGPT, Codex, agentic browsing, and more. It's the consumerization of enterprise AI: the same interface you use at home, now wired into your company's systems.
Together, they form something that looks remarkably like an operating system. Frontier is the kernel. The superapp is the shell. And every employee's workflow runs on top.
The Numbers Behind the Ambition

What This Means

The enterprise AI race isn't about who has the smartest model anymore. It's about who becomes the operating system. OpenAI just made their move.
